The Effects of Interrupted Sleep and Bad Sleeping Habits on Your Health

If you struggle to get enough sleep at night, you’re not alone. Many of us lead busy lives that result in bad sleeping habits, and have issues with interrupted sleep even when we do go to bed at a reasonable time.

Late nights and early mornings, restless sleep, and infrequent sleep schedules can affect us in a multitude of ways. The American Academy Of Sleep Medicine, recommends at least 7 hours of sleep every night for adults, and when we don’t reach that number, we can experience negative health effects.

 

 

1. Less Sleep Leads to More Stress

One of the major causes of stress and anxiety is a lack of sleep. When you do not get enough sleep, your body releases cortisol, a stress hormone.

One study focusing on salaried workers found a strong correlation between stress levels and amount of sleep. It found that the less sleep these workers got in a night, the more stress they experienced both at work and at home. 

 

2. Lack of Sleep and Physical Health

Sleep loss is an invitation to many physical health issues, including many cardiovascular diseases. Interrupted sleep and bad sleeping habits can have a negative effect on your heart. 

One study found that adequate sleep is very important for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study found that not only was not enough sleep dangerous, but sleeping too much can also lead to health issues such as diabetes and coronary heart disease.

Not getting the optimal amount of sleep can lead to a variety of health issues, including:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Irregular heartbeat

3. Depression and Bad Sleeping Habits

Sleep disorders and depression commonly go hand in hand. A study found that a large percentage of those suffering from depression also struggle with insomnia (trouble sleeping), hypersomnia (trouble staying awake), or both. 

While oftentimes depression is what leads to sleep disorders, this study found that bad sleeping habits can be the cause of depression as well. So regardless of what comes first, improving your sleep can help prevent or manage your depression.

 

4. Impaired Brain Function

Interrupted sleep can also affect your judgment and decision making throughout the day. A lack of sleep can lead to forgetfulness and slower mental processing, which can affect your performance at work.  

One study found that sleep deprivation has an adverse effect on overall cognitive performance. Not only is decision making affected, but lack of sleep can lead to learning and memory issues as well. When your brain gets enough sleep and is well-rested, it grabs information quickly and responds to it more accurately.
