The medicinal benefits backing CBD oil have made it one of the most beneficial and powerful cannabinoid among the masses. From anxiety to body pain and seizures, CBD has proved beneficial in treating a large array of health issues. Recently a study took place which suggested that a cannabis supplement may help the cocaine and alcohol addicts in overcoming their cravings.
During the research, recovering rats were given cannabidiol for three consecutive days. After just these three days, rats were less likely to relapse to the drugs again.
This supplement CBD is becoming popular for its various medicinal benefits. It does not make you high as opposed to the major high inducing property of THC.
The reason behind this effect on rats is because CBD eases stress and anxiety and also reduces impulsive behavior.
It is also hoped that these findings will help in the development of treatments to reduce human drug cravings as well.
CBD is a supplement which is derived from cannabis and is said to possess a wide range of health benefits. It has helped people suffering from migraines, psoriasis, depression, and acne.
About the Research
Rats who were addicted to cocaine or alcohol have applied a gel containing CBD every day for a complete week. This gel was applied to their skin.
Researchers performed tests to determine the responses of rats to stressful and anxiety-provoking situations. They also determined how impulsive the rats were during that time.
Thus, this study paved the way for humans as well. CBD oil can help in withdrawing alcohol and cocaine cravings in human as well as can treat various side effects of such cravings. People suffer from anxiety, depression, appetite issues due to such cravings and CBD has proved to treat all of these.
Coming back to the study, Dr. Friedbert Weiss, the lead author, said,” The efficacy of the CBD to reduce reinstatement in rats with both alcohol and cocaine – and, as previously reported, heroin – histories predicts the therapeutic potential for addiction treatment across several classes of abused drugs.
“The results provide proof of principle supporting the potential of CBD in relapse prevention along two dimensions: beneficial actions across several vulnerability states and long-lasting effects with only brief treatment.
“Drug addicts enter relapse vulnerability states for multiple reasons.
“Therefore, effects such as those observed with CBD that concurrently ameliorates several of these are likely to be more effective in preventing relapse than treatments targeting only a single state.”
“Cannabidiol reverses some of the brain changes that occur with heroin use”, Yasmin Hurd, director of the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, says.
According to her studies, CBD reversed the damage to the cannabinoid receptors themselves, which was caused by Heroin by activating the serotonin receptors, which are believed to affect the mood and social anxiety. Cannabidiol can be considered as a beneficial treatment for opioid addiction and other drugs.
Reversing the Damage of Heroine
Cannabidiol can be considered as a more important cannabinoid as compared to marijuana when it comes to treating addiction.
THC, on the one hand, binds to the cannabinoid receptors found in the Endocannabinoid system of our body. This binding results in “high”. On the other hand, Cannabidiol has a very weak binding capacity to these receptors. Instead, it binds it negatively and reduces the high induced with THC.
So, we can now conclude that CBD oil can be the future for treating such cocaine and alcohol addiction as well as can prove to be beneficial in reducing the cravings. We hope you liked this article. Please let us know your suggestions in the comment section below!!
