CBD Brain Healing

CBD Increases Blood Flow In Brain Regions Linked To Memory

The demand for CBD has risen exponentially over the past few years on account of the swaths of published research, anecdotal accounts, as well as media reporting on the medicinal benefits of the CBD compound. CBD has been under scientific study and has become the first cannabis-derived plant compound ever sanctioned by the FDA, employed to control seizures in acute types of epilepsy. By 2023, the European CBD marketplace alone is expected to exceed one billion Euros.

Another cannabinoid, part of the ‘big six’ group of cannabinoids and one of the most researched cannabinoids, is Cannabichromene (CBC). Like CBD, it is non-intoxicating, and reveals a strong ability for providing pain and inflammation relief, mood alleviation, and improving stem cell function.

CBD has been found to bestow positive health outcomes in brain function by lowering signs of psychosis and anxiety, and by impacting the way the brain performs emotional memory processing. This can have a beneficial therapeutic impact in those with PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) and other psychiatric disorders.

CBD Augments Blood Flow In Regions Of The Brain Associated With Memory Processing

A new research study, headed by the University College London researchers, and published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, presents sound evidence of the manner in which cannabidiol (CBD) augments cerebral blood flow in the brain regions associated with memory processing.

This latest research aimed to measure the acute impact of CBD on blood flow in brain regions linked to memory processing. Baseline blood flow measurements were the primary metric investigated, based on prior findings of research it was suggested that higher hippocampal blood flow can be associated with improved memory performance.

15 healthy subjects were brain scanned after being administered a placebo or a capsule containing 600 mg of CBD. Measurement of cerebral blood flow was carried out utilizing a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedure known as arterial spin labeling.

The outcome displayed a substantial rise in hippocampal blood flow subsequent to a single dose of CBD. On the other hand, the study also interestingly observed similar increase of blood flow was not found in other brain regions in the vicinity of the medial temporal lobe. Increases in blood flow were also viewed within the orbitofrontal cortex, an area recognized for decision making.

The lead author on the new study, Michael Bloomfield, of the Institute of Mental Health at the University College London tells, “ “To our knowledge, this is the first study to find that CBD increases blood flow to key regions involved in memory processing, particularly the hippocampus,” “This supports the view that CBD has region-specific blood flow effects in the human brain, which has previously been disputed.”

Conclusions Indicated By The Results:  CBD Link to Bain Memory

  1. A link between CBD and a rise in cerebral blood flow within the hippocampus.
  2. No changes in the performance of memory task
  3. A major link was observed between higher CBD-induced increases in cerebral blood flow in orbitofrontal and an associated lessened reaction time on a two-back working memory task
  4. A major discovery for memory conditions like Post-traumatic stress disorder and improving targeted therapy methods

“These findings may have implications for the potential use of CBD across a range of disorders associated with hippocampal dysfunction, including Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD and depression,” the researchers wrote.

This study rather hints at the research directions taken towards examining the capacity of CBD to help in treating neurological conditions related to area-specific blood flow defects.

“If replicated, these results could lead to further research across a range of conditions characterized by changes in how the brain processes memories, including Alzheimer’s disease, where there are defects in the control of blood control flow, along with schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder,” claims Broomfield.

What This Means For CBD Brain Healing

The antipsychotic potential of CBD is well-known, as an exploratory trial by researchers from King’s College in 2017 discovered the beneficial effects of CBD in patients suffering from schizophrenia linked psychosis, though the mechanisms that were at play were unclear.

Building scientific studies on the effects of CBD will open the avenues for more clinical trials on the efficacy of CBD in various levels of psychosis and neuropsychiatric ailments like Parkinson’s, where patients can experience psychotic symptoms. This new research mentioned in the post can open the way to mark the changes in the memory processing power of the brain across various mental ailments.
