All You Need To Know About CBD And Anandamide

If we keep aside the environmental factors and take into account our body and brain, we will be able to find an important link called Anandamide or “The Bliss Molecule”. This molecule is a potential antidepressant and plays a very important role in making us happy. But how does this happen and what is its connection with CBD? And how can we activate these molecules to become happier people?

In this article, we will discuss the role of Anandamide on our body and how can CBD help in stimulating it. We will also look at a few more ways that can be adopted to boost this chemical.

What Is Anandamide?

Anandamide is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain similar to dopamine and serotonin receptors. The name is taken from the Sanskrit word Ananda–which means joy, bliss, delight– and amide–a carbonyl group bonded to a nitrogen. Also considered an endocannabinoid, Anandamide interacts with the naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors in our body.

The discovery of this bliss chemical came out in the 1980s due to an attempt to discover the effects of THC on the human body. They observed that its THC perfectly binds with receptors in the brain and CNS. Dr. Rapheal Mechoulam then discovered this chemical while answering the question: Why do our bodies contain cannabinoid receptors that are capable of binding with external or cannabinoids such as THC or CBD?

Why Is Anandamide Important For Our Body?

Anandamide, the bliss molecule is related to a host of psychological factors such as mood fluctuation, pain management, appetite stimulation, and fertility. Its ability to bind with the two main receptors majorly CB1 and CB2 helps our body in maintaining homeostasis.

Our body consists of the Endocannabinoid system that is home to naturally occurring receptors primarily CB1 and CB2. Anandamide is also a part of this system and is thus considered an endocannabinoid. Our mood, happiness, fear, anxiety, stress as well as pain are all regulated by the ECS.

When our body has to maintain homeostasis (a balance), they tend to create anandamide on demand. As this chemical, it binds with the receptors present in our body primarily CB1 and CB2 just like THC.

By regulating the CB receptors, anandamide also helps in the formation of new nerve cells in the brain known as neurogenesis which is important for functions such as learning and memory. Moreover, anandamide exhibits both anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties.

Benefits Of Anandamide

A high level of anandamide is very beneficial for our brain as well as the body. A study performed in 2015 on humans and mice discovered that high levels of anandamide acted as a catalyst for enhancing mood and reducing fear as well.

In both, the model of study, an inhibited production of an enzyme called FAAH was responsible for breaking down of anandamide. This process also led to a decrease in fear and anxiety during times of perceived threat.

Another study done in 2009, showed the potential of Anandamide in ovulation. It was also discovered that the fluctuation of anandamide can also affect fetal development. A higher level of anandamide during ovulation can help in a successful pregnancy.

The Connection between ECS, CBD, And Anandamide

You must be aware of CBD as it is one of the most abundant cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant other than THC. This cannabinoid is being accepted as an incredible supplement to treat a variety of health issues. Two major reasons behind this acceptance are its non-psychoactive nature and safe use.

This means that, unlike THC, CBD does not make you high when consumed because CBD oil is mostly extracted from the hemp plant and this plant has less than 0.3% THC which is actually not enough to make you high.

Furthermore, CBD is also safe to use and will have almost no side effects.

As we discussed above, THC perfectly binds with the receptors present in the Endocannabinoid System thus impacting our brain and CNS creating a high or euphoric effect. However, the story of CBD is different when it comes to its working in our bodies.

CBD has very little affinity with the two major receptors i.e CB1 and CB2 yet it has been effective in binding to various other receptors present in the ECS.

Scientists discovered that CBD, when consumed, inhibits the production of the FAAH enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of anandamide in the body. So in simpler terms, a lesser quantity of FAAH in the body means less breakdown of Anandamide thus leading to more anandamide in the body for a longer time thus enhancing the properties of anandamide in the ECS.

Another groundbreaking research done in terms of CBD and anandamide showed that Cannabidiol enhances anandamide signaling and alleviates psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia. The results of the study suggest that inhibition of anandamide deactivation may contribute to the antipsychotic effects of cannabidiol potentially representing a completely new mechanism in the treatment of schizophrenia.

An increase in anandamide, in turn, helps in enhancing our mood, thus making us happier and less stressed. Thus, taking CBD oil can be a helpful way to increase the levels of bliss molecules in your body.

Become Happy Naturally

We told you how CBD can be essential in enhancing the positive effects of Anandamide. There are a few other ways as well that you can adapt to increase the levels of anandamide in your brain. After all, happiness is what we always desire in our lives. These ways include eating dark chocolates, truffles, and experiencing a runner’s high. All these are natural ways of making you feel the happiness that you usually don’t get due to many unforeseen factors. You can combine these ways along with CBD and experience the “bliss” by yourself.
